VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED FOR OTTOCYCLE!
The OttoCYCLE project allows the City of Winnipeg to see where citizens are currently cycling and how we can improve bikeway infrastructure to make cycling easier, safer and more accessible for all Winnipeggers.
- Kevin Nixon, Active Transportation Coordinator, City of Winnipeg
The Centre for Sustainabile Transportation needs volunteers to cycle with a small GPS device for a two-week period to record their cycling habits and routes. Volunteers are provided with an Otto-device that automatically records their cycling trips and are asked to complete a one-day trip diary and a short 10-minute survey.
They’ve had a great response so far with over 650 participants enrolled, but are still looking for more. They’d like capture as many routes, areas and demographic groupings as possible to present the City with the most accurate and wide-range information they can so the City can improve cycling infrastructure in the most useful and practical ways, prompting safer, more accessible cycling routes that every cycling skill level can enjoy.

Ciclovia - September 13th, 2009

It’s time to take back the streets Winnipeg!
On SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 from 8am until 6pm, the ENTIRE NORTH SIDE OF BROADWAY, from Main to Osborne, will be CLOSED TO MOTORIZED VEHICLES for Ciclovia, connecting Assiniboine Park all the way to The Forks!!!
What’s Ciclovia?
Ciclovia, meaning “bike way,” began in Bogotà, Colombia, where every Sunday major roads are blocked off and millions of people fill them running, walking, biking and enjoying free outdoor fitness classes like yoga and aerobics.
Ciclovia events have been held all over the world, but have yet to hit Canadian streets until now.
Although talks exist for a Vancouver Ciclovia, WINNIPEG WILL BE THE FIRST CANADIAN CITY TO HOST!
Numerous organizations are hoping to make this a regular event in Winnipeg, and are hosting this pilot project to gauge public interest.
The event will be held from 8am until 6pm, featuring:
- a hay maze
- a farmers’ market
- street vendors
- a kids’ zone
- buskers & live entertainment
- FREE horse drawn wagon rides
- outdoor fitness classes
and other non-motorized fun!
The lovely all girl group, Oh My Darling, will wrap up the event with a special concert at The Forks’ Oodena Circle at 4pm!!
The goal is to promote physical activity and the environmental benefits of using non-motorized forms of transportation.
So bring out your bikes, blades, boards, & beyond and we’ll see YOU Ciclovia Sunday!!!
International Walk to School Month - October
Thousands of Manitoba schoolchildren will join millions of others from over 40 countries to celebrate walking to school this October in recognition of International Walk to School Month. There are so many great reasons to participate! Walk to School Month encourages physical fitness. It’s a chance to celebrate our environment by keeping our air clean, to share walking safety skills with children, to bring safety to our neighbourhoods and reduce crime, to address traffic congestion, pollution and speed around our schools, and to spend valuable time with one another. All great reasons to get your school and community involved!
How to Participate
Registration is free – once schools have registered they will receive a confirmation e-mail and a registration package filled with great ideas for how to plan, day, week or month long events!
